WEEK TWO: IT GETS HARDER

Hello!

Week two was a lot harder. We taught two investigators this week, Jonathon and Adrianna, in the Teaching Resource Center, or TRC. The TRC is made up of people that are hired (both members and non-members) to pretend to be investigators and allow the missionaries to practice teaching. You have no idea if the person you are teaching is a member or not, so you have to assume that they aren't.

Our first time teaching Jonathon and Adrianna was not good. We came out and Elder Rice said that he thought the lesson went well, but Elder Blaine and I thought it went horribly. We had completely different ideas about their needs and where they were at in their conversion. In short, the Spirit wasn't there.

For our last lesson with Jonathon, we read him The Family: A Proclamation to the World. He liked the idea that the Church had a traditional stance on marriage and family, but still didn't seem to have progressed at all since we started teaching him.

Adrianna started with a belief in God and Jesus Christ, and had a college roommate who had served a mission and was telling her about the Church. For our last lesson, we decided to take her out of the cubicle area, and downstairs to look at the pictures of Christ. We looked at each of them and talked briefly about what the art showed, and answered any questions she had. We got to the picture of Christ and the little boy that had made me cry, and I just started talking to her about how I felt about it. Everything just spilled out and we just talked. I told her about how Christ wants to know each of us individually, and He wants all of us to come to him. He wants us to be humble like little children, and that His suffering was individual and personal. She stopped and stared at the picture, and we asked her what she was feeling. She told us that she was feeling peaceful. I was so happy. We just sat and stared at the picture for a few minutes.

It turns out that Adrianna was actually a member, and she had recently returned from a mission to Sao Paulo, Brazil. It still felt like a really real experience. This week was a really strange and stressful week, but hopefully it helped me to grow a little bit.
